Black Ribbon Day commemoration in Toronto organized by the Baltic Federation in Canada
Last night, I spoke at the Black Ribbon Day commemoration in Toronto organized by the Baltic Federation in Canada. On Black Ribbon Day, Canadians commemorate the millions of victims of Nazi German and Communist crimes in Europe.

Now, more than ever, it is important for us to honour the memory of the millions of victims of Stalin’s and Hitler’s tyrannical and genocidal regimes and to heed the lessons of history, because right now history is repeating itself.

Just like Hitler and Stalin did decades ago, Vladimir Putin is waging war in Europe and is perpetrating untold atrocities. Tyranny and crime by an illegitimate ruler in Belarus are undermining democracy and basic human rights in that country.

On Black Ribbon Day, on the anniversary of Stalin’s and Hitler’s evil deal to carve up Central and Eastern Europe, let’s learn from this dark chapter in our history and let’s act to avoid repeating it.

Let us redouble our commitment to support the Ukrainian people in their brave fight for their freedom against Russia’s criminal barbarism. Let us redouble our commitment to support the people of Belarus in their courageous fight for democracy and human rights.
