To commemorate and celebrate Vyshyvanka Day, and to show our support for the Ukrainian people, I joined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, members of the Government caucus, and Ambassador Yuliya Kovaliv in our vyshyvanky in the Chamber of the House of Commons.
Canada is unwavering in our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and we stand steadfast in our support for the people of Ukraine who are bravely defending their freedom.
As we speak, the Ukrainian people are risking everything and sacrificing their lives to defend Ukraine from Russia’s genocidal war.
Notwithstanding the courage and resolve of the Ukrainian people, the situation is dire and this war is having global consequences:
-Hundreds of millions in the Global South are facing food shortages and famine;
-The war is one of the primary causes of food and energy price inflation here in
Canada and around the world;
-The war poses an existential threat to global security and to Canada’s security.
Victory is, of course, the only option for Ukraine, but it is also the only option for Canada.
If Russia wins, it will not stop at Ukraine. If Russia wins, Europe, the US and Canada will be next in defending ourselves against Russian aggression. So, every Ukrainian soldier fighting today is one less Canadian who will have to fight in the future. Every dollar spent today is millions of dollars less that we will have to spend in the future.
Our government understands this and that is one of the reasons that Canada has been a global leader in supporting Ukraine. Under this government, Canada has committed approximately $13 billion in funding for financial, military, humanitarian, development, and immigration assistance to Ukraine.
If we want to stop global food shortages and inflation, and protect our own sovereignty and security, we must ensure that Ukraine achieves a decisive victory.
Our government will stand with the Ukrainian people until they win – until we all win.
Slava Ukraini!
