Meeting with representatives from Home Children Canada
November 7, 2023
From 1869 - 1948, over 100,000 British children were sent to Canada from Great Britain. Some children were orphans, but most were from destitute families or families who had fallen on very difficult times through sickness or even death. Some of the children were even sent from the UK to Canada without their parent's consent.

The children sent to Canada often found themselves in indentured servitude on farms or as domestic labourers. Many Home Children were very poorly treated and faced cruel abuse.

Today, it is thought that more than 10% of Canada’s population may be descended from British Home Children - That would mean that today almost 4 million Canadians are descendants of the Home Children.

Recently, I met with representatives from Home Children Canada to discuss the terrible experiences British home children and their families have lived through and what Canada can do to better educate Canadians on this part of Canadian history.
