To make housing more affordable, the federal government is removing the GST on construction of new rental apartment buildings and encouraging provinces to do so as well. This will incentivize the building of more rental housing, increasing supply which is what we must do to lower rental costs for Canadians.

Recently Pierre Poilievre has said that he could make homes more affordable far more quickly, so I asked non-partisan senior civil servants testifying at the Standing Committee on Finance, how the government's plan to provide a GST exemption on purpose built rental units compares to Pierre Poilievre's plan.

The response in a nutshell: The government’s plan will result in the building of far more homes and make housing more affordable than Pierre Poilievre's housing plan.
